Carlsbad, New Mexico

Carlsbad is best know for the caverns which are not far from town. The Carlsbad Caverns park entrance is located on USHwy62/180 approximately 18 miles southwest of town. It is part of the Carlsbad Caverns National Park.

The caverns are open to the public with guided tours year round with most visitation following Memorial Day. A favorite event is the bat flight program that are scheduled from Memorial Day weekend through the middle of October. The optimal viewing time normally occurs in July and August when the current year bat pups first join the flight of adult bats.

Evening star parties or Night Sky Programs are also held there from time to time to allow visitors to view the dark night skies through telescopes.

Another event in town is the annual Christmas on the Pecos. It is held between the end of November until December 31 (except Christmas Eve). It involves a 40-min. boat ride down the Pecos River that runs through town to view the Christmas lights of the resident's along the river.
