When we think of the name Cimarron we have visions of the old west. The village is surrounded on all sides by numerous ranches, including Philmont Scout Ranch, an extensive "high-adventure base" operated by the Boy Scouts of America.
Although the Cimarron Cut-off of the Santa Fe Trail has the same name it did not actually go through the town.
The St. James Hotel is a historic hotel, restaurant and bar in town. It is known for its legendary status of being haunted by the spirits of men murdered there in the 19th century during New Mexico's "wild west" days. It is also worthwhile to visit the Old Aztec Mill Museum in the summer when it is open.
