Dixon is an unincorporated community located in Rio Arriba County on NMHwy-75, just east of NMHwy-68 in the north-central part of the state. It is on the banks of the Embudo Creek which runs from the Sangre de Cristo mountains to the Rio Grande River. The town has the largest population of organic farmers in the state, as well as two wineries, the La Chiripada Winery and the Vivác Winery. Black Mesa Winery is not far away in Valarde. There are many small farms along the Embudo Creek that rely on its waters through the acequias or irrigation canals. Each acequia has a mayordomo who is in charge of allocating irrigation water to each farmer along its route. Themovie "The Milagro Beanfield War" is a good example of how important the acequias are to the New Mexico farmers in the valleys of the state.
Every year the Dixon Studio Art Tour is held on the first weekend of November throughout the town in many of the community buildings and private homes. In August the fiesta Las Fiestas de Santa Rosa is held with members of the community. The fiesta begins with a parade through town and then music, dancing and food.
