The Enchanted Circle, New Mexico

There are three towns in the northern Sangre de Cristo mountains that make up what is known as the Enchanted Circle- Red River, Eagle Nest and Angel Fire. All of these towns are on the a highway circle north of Taos off of NMHwy-522 beginning at Questa and circling around and back to Taos.

Red River is the fartherest north of the three. It is best known for skiing in the winter, fishing in the river, summer RV camping and various festivals (Red River Songwriters Festival, Mardi Gras in the Mountains and the Memorial Day Motorcycle Rally. Since the summer weather there is very pleasant there are many vacation homes there in the mountains attracting multitudes of vacationing Texans.

Eagle Nest is a community of people who are not only interested in the cool summer climate, but also enjoy fishing in the lake. Fishing can be enjoyed all year round, since as soon as the lake freezes over in the winter the ice fishermen take over. The more pleasant weather attracts campers, backpackers and hikers as well.

Angel Fire's attractions include skiing and surfboarding in the winter, a summertime chamber music festival, golfing, fishing and hiking. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial built for David Westphall, son of Victor and Jeanne Westphall is also located there. The memorial had its origins in a battle near Con Thien, South Vietnam in which 17 men lost their lives including their son, David Westphall.
