Lincoln, New Mexico

Lincoln's claim to fame includes the lore of Billy the Kid. The story of the famous outlaw is a convoluted one. He and several other of the New Mexico Regulators carried on a conflict which began as a deputized posse seeking revenge for the death of their boss and friend, John Tunstall. After barely escaping with his life, Billy became an outlaw and a fugitive. He stole horses and cattle until his arrest in 1880 for the killing of Sheriff Brady during the Lincoln County War. He was finally shot by Sheriff Pat Garrett in Fort Sumner, New Mexico.

If you go to Lincoln Historical Site you can visit many of the sites of historical interest. Also a visit to Fort Sumner will allow you to better understand the incarceration of the Navajo's and Mescalero Apaches at Bosque Redondo.
