Santa Fe the "City Different" is called that mainly because of the decision by Santa Fe officials in 1912 who ordered that all buildings in the city be built with adobe in the Pueblo Indian style. From then on anyone who wanted to build a new or refurburish an old buiding in the city had to get a building permit that conformed to the new rules.
Today tourists from all over the world come to Santa Fe to enjoy its architecture, southwestern food, art, weather, festivals and hospitality. It has also become a location of retirement for many of the older residents. The city is the third largest art market in the U.S., has many restaurants featuring "green chile" specialties, and has a rich history going back to 1610.
