Little Bighorn Days, Hardin, MT

The Little Bighorn Days are held on the nearest weekend to June 25 in Hardin, Montana to commemorate the battle of the "Little Bighorn" also known as "Custer's Last Stand" which occurred on that date in 1876 in Montana territory near the Little Bighorn River. The people of Hardin have made a celebration of cultural heritage out of the battle by sponsoring events beginning on Thursday of that week, lasting all weekend and ending on Sunday.

One of the events is the 1876 Grand Ball. All are invited to attend either as a spectator or as a participant. The participants learn to dance as they would have in 1876 and dress in period clothing. They conduct a Grand March before dancing to music of the period.

Another reenactment is held on the Crow Indian Reservation at the Real Bird Campground. This one is put on by the Crow Indians of the Real Bird family. It is the reenactment of the battle from the Indian's point of view and is reenacted at the spot where Custer's troops were turned around at the Little Big Horn River at Medicine Tail Coulee. From there they went up the hill to their "last stand."
