Smithville does not have the same German heritage that is so prevalent in other communities around it in central Texas. Most of the Germans who came to Smithville came as entrepreneurs after the town was planned when the railroad came in not as early settlers. They came from the many surrounding German communities such as LaGrange, Rosanky, Rockne, Cistern and String Prairie.
