Spring 2020
Spring arrived with a continuance of the cronavirus (COVID-19) from the winter 2019. So many restrictions in Santa Fe (no gatherings, stores, restaurants, museum, etc. are closed). It is a new life for all of us! Susan and I are staying in as much as possible. We are usually taking trips around the state this time of year, but we will not be going out much until the cronovirus is under control and we have either had it or get a vaccination. No volunteering or classes that we usually attend. Thank goodness we live in a beautiful place and the weather will be getting warmer allowing for gardening activities around the house although we did have snow on the 1st day of the month.
We have decided to do a lot of gardening around the house for the rest of the year here at Eldorado Windy Farm. You can keep up with what we are doing by clicking on parts of my website Eldorado Windy Farm Farm Blog under the 2020 sections. To keep up with specific parts go to the Vegetable & Herb Garden, the Fruit Orchard, or the Flower Garden. I will be keeing up with the plants that are blooming around the farm on my Flowering Plant Schedule by Date.

Took a drive to Las Vegas, NM to see how many businesses were open. We noticed that some were open, but most were either shut down or closed. They are really feeling the effects of loss of tourism! Then we went to the Las Vegas National Wildlife Refuge to eat our sandwiches and chips. Beautiful being out in the open with no people around!

We decided to go for a little drive at lunchtime. Susan made avacato and cheese sandwiches and we drove over to Hwy 14 through Galisteo. Went up Gold Mine Road to enjoy our picnic lunch. Not a car around! Then went to Madrid to walk around a little. Hardly anyone there, so we didn't have to use our masks. Fortunately even a mannequin there at the coffee shop was wearing one!

Susan and I drove a north loop today. She made a lunch for us that we ate on the side of the road looking at the Truches Montains. Beautiful and isolated! We drove up to Nambe through Cyndiyo to Cordova to Truches and back through Chimayo.

Spring brings on many interesting phenomena around the farm.
The bunnies prefer to eat the sweet carrots rather than the surrounding grass.
Some bird, probably a Canyon Tohee, laid an egg in the bird feeder. Who knows why?

Decided to take a drive and a picnic lunch for an outing without people. We drove north on I-25 to Wagon Mound, then toward the Sangre de Cristo mountains to Ocate to Hwy-161 through the little lost town of Golondrinas back to Watrous and home. The drive after going through the Pecos mountains to Las Vegas leads to the beginning of the great prairie which stretches all across the central U.S. On our drive we saw a pair of Canada geese, a herd of buffalo and a group of pronghorn antelope. Hardly any cars anywhere!

Today a coachwhip snake that was hiding under the portal flagstones jumped out to catch a lizard running by. He/she missed, but gave away the hiding place in a mouse hole. I hope there is more success with the mice in the garden.
Just finished bottling up 7 pts. of sourkraut. I made it in a crock using two heads of cabbage about three weeks ago. From time to time when I run out I make both sourkraut and kimchi in Vegetable Fermentation Crocks from Mud Slide Stoneware. It is a local company owned by Colin Dyck.

Drove down to Cerrillos and Madrid just to get out in this beautiful weather. Everything closed in both towns! Only the grocery store in Madrid is still open. Hardly any cars on the highway either. Stopped by Beer Creek Brewing Company on Hwy-14 to pick up pizza and salad to bring home. Called ahead, gave information and went in with a mask on to pick it up. Funny way to have to get food, but it is the safest way. We are also using Instacart to have groceries delivered from grocery stores as well. We order online and the groceries are left on the bench on our front porch.
Bunnies still around eating from the bird feeder.
